About Our Bakery
Tiers Of Joy started off as a faint dream that seemed impossible (as well as owning a store but that comes later).
Years ago (2008) I had a strong desire to learn how to decorate a cake but didn’t know where to start (before I had an iphone, Pinterest and YouTube).
About two years later I started working at Sweet Christine’s, mostly packaging wholesale but also observing how to make buttercream icing and decorate a cake. In 2012 I attended a Wilton’s decorating class at Michael’s with my sister. In 2013 Rosa (at Sweet Christine’s, now Queen R Bakes) taught me how to put a layered cake together.
For a few years, I practiced making gluten-free cakes for friends, family, and special occasions. One memory that sticks out to me during that time was when my dad saw a cake I had decorated and was impressed. It was like something all of a sudden something woke up on the inside of me. His encouragement spoke to my spirit, even as an adult.
To all you dads out there, your words have power over your child’s destiny.
In December 2017 I decided to make myself a cake for my birthday to share with co-workers during my military drill weekend. My supervisor raved about my buttercream icing, requesting one for his birthday. This turned into a year of monthly birthday cake requests.
In November 2018 I set up a table at our church craft fair in hopes of having success in selling jewelry (for fun I signed up with a friend to sell jewelry, bags, and clothes; but actually bought more than I sold). Not getting a lot of business, but believing God for favor, a man at my church (Norm) walked by my table…stopped, took a step back… looked at me, pointed my way, and said “Customers are coming” then kept walking. I only had two customers that day, but I held on to the word wondering what it meant. I had recently toyed with the idea of supplying local stores/restaurants with GF desserts but it seemed unattainable and wasn’t on my radar.
In December 2018 I made dessert for our drill weekend Christmas holiday party. A co-worker in leadership looked at me and said “You should start a business”. When I went home that day I mentioned the comment to my husband. By the end of January, my husband had all the paperwork filled out and put his marketing skills to use. Customers started flooding in. Thus began my home baking business.
I don’t want to forget to give my sister credit for naming the business. I had made her a GF cake with buttercream icing (when she was eating dairy), and with the first bite she “cried” tears of joy.
Fast forward to November 2022. During our Thanksgiving Sunday church meeting everyone was giving testimonies on what God has done for them. After I said mine, our pastor Ann turned to me and said “A commercial kitchen is going to fall into your lap”.
Recently in February 2023, I received a call from the Artisan Exchange. Their gluten-free baker was retiring and they wanted to see if I was interested in a spot. Not knowing how it all was going to work out but trusting God, I moved forward and He provided. It’s amazing how everything lined up. Too much to type. The story doesn’t end here. The open door at the Artisan Exchange allowed my husband and I to sell our home and pursue buying land so that we could build a home with a separate commercial kitchen and storefront.
Stayed tuned for the fulfillment of The Store.
